Emptyage: Generation X Doesn't Want to Hear It →
Earlier generations have weathered recessions, of course; this stall we’re in has the look of something nastier. Social Security and Medicare are going to be diminished, at best. Hours worked are up even as hiring staggers along: Blood from a stone looks to be the normal order of things “going…

Now THAT'S customer service
Two days ago, Netflix Instant Watch was down for a few hours. In our house, Netflix and Hulu have replaced cable all together. So when I fired up my Xbox and couldn’t access Netflix, I was definitely disappointed. The service was back up and running in a few hours, so all was well in the end. I can’t remember another time when the service was unavailable on Netflix’s end. Xbox...
The Zune is dead, long live the iPod →
Microsoft has announced that they’re not going to produce any further models of the Zune, their “me too” personal media player and lackluster iPod competitor. I’m glad its gone. Not because I hate Microsoft (because I don’t), but because it’s one less unremarkable, derivative product on the market. Apple haters have a mythos that the market will choose an Apple...

Hear, frakking hear! For a long time, Flash was the only way you could make a website do certain things and frankly, it was never a good way to do those things. Now that list of “crap I can only do with Flash” is getting so short that its relevance has all but disappeared. If I never have to make anything in Flash again, it will be TOO SOON!

Shedding Facebook friends
I just shed about 80 Facebook friends. Mostly it was people that I just don’t talk to anyway. There’s no malice in it, just a desire for simplification. I’ve still got 160 or so friends in there for now, which is more than I follow on Twitter, but I’m not actually on Facebook much. The way I see it, the lingering benefit is that I can still have correspondence with people...

– From this GeekDad article. If I ever have little slayers of my own, I’ll definitely be watching BTVS with them at some point.
If you’re not pissing off SOMEONE, you’re probably not as...
– Sally Hogshead, author of a great little book called Radical Careering, has a new book out called Fascinate. She’s appropriately lit up her social media connections about its impending release and has just said on Twitter what I’ve quoted above. I’ve heard this same sentiment from...

Comment about visual resumes. →
I use a visual resume when I’m job hunting and it’s served me well. When I came across this article, I couldn’t help but chime in. With so many people out there looking for jobs, this might be something they find helpful.
I stay on station and puff away. Another woman walks by and breaks into a...

Broke a rim this morning
This morning my dear MINI fell victim to nasty road conditions and bad driving on my part. I ended up sliding sideways into a curb at about 10 mph. It broke a big chunk out of my front rim, let the air out of the tire and did unknown damage to components deeper in. But in the end, I’m not too worried about it because I have really good insurance. I recommend State Farm to anybody....

My five-sentence review of Holmes
It [Holmes] has all the classic elements of a Holmes mystery (the “Bond, James Bond” bits, if you will) but adds so much more interest to the character. RDJr adds a fallibility, humanity, and depth to Holmes that I’ve never found with him in the books. He’s brilliant, sure, but he’s more of a brawler, more an adventurer, and much more ideosyncratic and anti-social —...
Taking Tumblr back
To anyone who is following this Tumblr account for updates about Project Streetliner, I’ll say one last time that the project has its own website now: www.projectstreetliner.com. That’s where all the latest info will be. You won’t find it here.
In fact, I’m going to reclaim this Tumblr space and use it as a repository of things too short for my blog, but too long for...

Project Streetliner has a new home →
Hey folks. I’m VERY pleased to announce that Project Streetliner has outgrown Tumblr! In order to allow the kind of collaboration I really want to see happen with this project, I’ve created a dedicated site. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS if you’d like to keep up with my progress.
